Urban Renaissance
The building operation recuperates the derelict industrial area using architectural elements taken from the city's traditional monuments. The project aims to contribute to the reconstruction of the urban weave of the Pista quarter by creating a complex of mixed buildings with the residential zones enriched with showrooms, workshops, professional studios, banks to inject life into the area. "When work has been completed - explained the famous Luxembourg architect, personal adviser to the Prince of Wales on urban-planning issues - we will be able to experiment the effects of 'densification', that is the thick network of streets and squares even with limited extension following the historical European model". The complex will include a system of open spaces, with the porticoed squares (which represent one of the fundamental features of the Piedmont city's urban layout and a collection of buildings which reflect the architectural style of the traditional city: the 'Renaissance building', complete with courtyards opening on the internal gardens, the city residential buildings and the house with a courtyard. "Moreover - says Tagliaventi, architect from Bologna - with the creation of the new piazzas, there will also be a pedestrian zone that will allow the visitors to enjoy the history intrinsic in the main public buildings of the area: from the hospital of Via Palermo to the Church 'Madonna del Suffragio'. These two buildings will be even stronger and more symbolic references for the entire quarter". Work on the building sites began in January 1998 and should terminate in June 2000. The new buildings will be completed with the traditional building techniques and materials used in combination with technologically advanced plant utilities. 'The project 'Cittą Nuova (New City)' - a spokesman pointed out - is the first operation in Italy that can be considered 'Urban Renaissance'. It is the perfect example of how suburban areas can be redeveloped with places where people can find a welcoming atmosphere of peaceful yet stimulating life-style ". Regarding the telematic aspects, Internet navigators from every corner of the world can make a virtual visit to the complex. They will be abl to meet and interact because each one will be present inside the quarter under the form of Avatar, a technical term borrowed from the Hindu religion which symbolizes th graphic representation of the surfer within the virtual world.
